The Fortune Café
A Tangerine Street Romance
(a novel in three parts)

Welcome to Tangerine Street

Tangerine Street is a must-see tourist stop with a colorful mix of one-of-a-kind boutiques, unique restaurants, eclectic museums, quaint bookstores, and exclusive bed-and-breakfasts. The Fortune Café, situated in the middle of this charming collection of shops and cafés on Tangerine Street, is a Chinese restaurant unlike any other because, well, to be honest, the fortunes found in the cookies all come true…

MIS-FORTUNE Emma, a waitress at The Fortune Café will do anything to avoid opening a fortune cookie. Each fortune is rumored to somehow magically come true. Being a girl grounded in reality, she doesn’t have time for that kind of nonsense. But when trying to prevent a food fight at the café, Emma accidentally cracks open a fortune cookie “Look around, love is trying to catch you.” If there is one thing that Harrison, her former best friend in high school is good at, it’s catching her unaware.

LOVE, NOT LUCK Lucy has always been lucky . . . until her parents meet her fiancé’s parents at a disastrous lunch at The Fortune Café, and she breaks her lucky jade necklace. Even worse, her fortune cookie reveals that “True love is for the brave, not the lucky.” How is she supposed to read that? She’s always considered it lucky how she met her fiancé. But after breaking her necklace, Lucy’s luck takes a dive. And when her fiancé dumps her, the only person she can turn to is Carter, the unluckiest guy she knows.

TAKEOUT Stella is content in her new life of taking over her mom’s jewelry shop. No more boyfriend to worry about, and as long as she stays busy, she doesn’t have to dwell on her non-existent love life. When Evan comes into the shop with his young daughter, Stella is charmed. But she is reluctant to complicate her straightforward life, so when she reads her fortune after ordering takeout from The Fortune Café, she completely ignores it. After all, how can a fortune as vague as “Do the thing you fear and love is certain,” apply to her?

It is truly wonderful to read what I call a “people” story where the romance grows from who the people are, their values, and how they connect on multiple levels (not solely on an attraction/sexual level). This is a clean read with realistic people in realistic situations. The best part of a people story for me is seeing how the characters work things through. Though fictional, there is still plenty here that is thought provoking and insightful. The three stories blend nicely, the main characters of one story taking a background role in the others. Each story stands alone if you need a quick read, yet is enriched by its shared history with the others. It’s well written, nicely paced, and I did not notice any grammatical or editing issues. My main 5-star criteria: is this a book I will read again? It’s a definite yes for this trio of stories!

All three of these novella's were really, really good and very well written. Each had their own unique story to be told. But the best part of all----at least for me--- was that these were all sweet, clean, contemporary reads.

I think I could relate more to the first story more than the others, mainly because my own life growing up emmulated Emma's to a tee, only mine was a bit worse. Mine also envolved bouts of physical abuse, too. And again, when it was time to take care of my mother, all of it was hefted onto my shoulders, while my siblings went about living their own lives, without ever looking back.

The second story involving Lucy was a very good one, too. I am a firm believer that life is what you make it, there's no such thing as a lucky charm. Lucy finally learned that lesson herself, but it took her a long time to come to that realization.

Finally the third book in this boxed set involves Stella. She lost her fiance' when she decided to move back home to take care of her sickly mother. She finally realized what kind of man he was when he chose to walk away, rather than to support her. That's okay, because in the end....Stella finally found a man that showed her how a real man should act.

I would highly recommend this boxed set to everyone.
The idea behind this novel was intriguing and I'm so glad I stumbled onto it when I did. I can't think of a better way to spend a lazy weekend than enjoying three sweet and fun romances.

With the story centered around a mystical Chinese restaurant where the fortunes actually come true, there was no shortage of interesting plots and lots of built-in anticipation to see how the characters would connect. I really loved the first story that focused on Emma and Harrison and their high school connection turned second chance romance. I was a little less into the second story about Carter and Lucy after her engagement fell apart, even though they turned out to be really cute. I have to say though, my favorite story was that of Stella and Evan which included his precious daughter, Katie. There's always something about a single parent that gets me every time.

The stories themselves are short enough to keep the pace moving throughout the book but in depth enough to get all the details you need without lacking anything. Even though I'd love to see them expanded and see what happens to the characters long term, I love how they all ended and how satisfying each one was. For this to have been written by three different authors, each one had a unique style that blended into a perfect mix of storytelling abilities between them. They seemed to all flow right into the next without feeling disjointed. This is definitely going into my go-to "lazy days" reads when I want to revisit the characters and relive their love stories. I'm looking forward to the author's next writing endeavor together as well!
The Fortune Café is three novellas about three women who have a casual connection through a Chinese restaurant in a coastal California town that reminds me a lot of Arroyo Grande. The owner of the restaurant believes the fortunes in the fortune cookies really do come true.

The first story is about Emma, a waitress at the restaurant, who is a confirmed introvert, and focused on building a fan base for her graphic novel stories and book. She has no time for anything else, especially romance which she views with skepticism. She thinks the magic fortune business is nonsense and won’t even open one. Then one night she serves Harrison, her best friend from high school whom she hasn’t seen in years. Harrison’s date is not thrilled at his re-ignited interest in Emma. Emma tries to distance herself from Harrison’s interest and focus on preparation for a graphic novel convention. She accidentally opens a fortune cookie and from there, it is about how her fortune comes true.

Lucy, the second character, is deep into plans and conflicts about her upcoming wedding.to obviously the wrong guy. A meet-and-greet lunch for parents at The Fortune Café is a disaster. The fiancé and his parents are jerks. Lucy’s fortune cookie message doesn’t bode well for the relationship. Shortly after, the fiancé dumps her and her next door neighbor steps in to distract her from the pain.

Stella, a jewelry designer, has a store down the street from The Fortune Café. Her time, energy and thoughts are all consumed by operating the store and caring for a very ill mother, She has no time for romance either. Enter the fortune cookie and a new chef at the local hotel.

The town and it’s Tangerine Street is an interesting setting with charming characters and I expect to see more stories from this author set in this locale. This was a pleasant, although somewhat predictable read. I did enjoy the stories.
